Opening The Word To Our World

History

Northside Baptist Church had its beginning in August, 1988, when a group of 15 adults and their families began meeting on Tuesday nights as a home Bible Study group.  First Baptist Church of Murfreesboro had voted to sponsor the work as a mission but could offer no financial assistance.  The need was felt to move these meetings to Sunday mornings, and on October 2, 1988, the group began meeting in the amphitheater of Middle Tennessee Medical Center.  Meetings were held there until November 20, 1988, when the group began meeting in the cafeteria of Oakland High School.  In July of 1989, Ken Polk was called by unanimous vote to come as pastor.  Brother Ken’s first Sunday as pastor was August 6, 1989.

In September of 1990, with the cooperation of First Baptist Church of Murfreesboro and the assistance of the Tennessee Baptist Convention, Northside purchased 22 acres of land from Stan Hooper at the corner of Thompson Lane and Siegel Road.  The church officially constituted on November 18, 1990, with 90 charter members.  In 1993, the church began to envision and plan the first phase building.  Construction began in March, 1995, under the leadership of Bob Griffin, a retired construction manager and member of the church.  The first service in the new building was held on Christmas Eve, 1995.  The dedication service for the new building was held on January 28, 1996.  The plaque commemorating that event hangs in the building’s original lobby and includes the verse from Ephesians 3:21 which reads, “To Him be glory in the church…throughout all generations.”  Few verses better represent the purpose and vision of  Northside Baptist Church.

Since entering our first building, Northside has grown to over 1,000 in membership with more than 65,000 square feet of facilities sitting on 22 acres of property.  God continues to add to our ministries and our staff every year.

We thank God for all that has happened.  Our history is His making and our future is in His hands.
